Don't know why your belt is splitting. The belt on my '87 Savage looked new when I traded it in at 30,000 miles. The belt on Linda's '96 Savage looks as good as new (5000 miles) and the belt on my HD (41,000 miles) shows very little wear. A friend of mine in Atlanta has an '87 Sporty he converted to belt drive in 1990. The belt has over 60,000 miles on it and is still going strong. The only belt failures I have seen were the result of vandalism.
Belt drive is one of the best features of the Savage. I will never own another chain drive road bike.
